Book or Media Request
The Book and Media Request form is now linked here and from the tab above.
Library Committee
The Faculty Library Committee met on March 19, 2012.
Outcomes:
- The Library Committee will continue to meet annually, in March.
- Prior to meeting, committee members will ask their students to assess library services in a class session using a common set of prompts.
- Based on a recent review by Dr. Catherine Clark’s students, librarians are revising the library home guide (http://discover.averett.edu/library) to make it more accessible to undergraduates.
- The library will create an electronic suggestion box for GPS students and others who use library services from remote locations.
(We have an ongoing dialog with students at the library through a suggestion box and bulletin board, and in performance reviews for library student assistants.)
- We will investigate JSTOR and Project Muse database subscriptions -- even though ILL service is highly rated, JSTOR can helpful in recruiting new faculty who want to pursue research interests while teaching at Averett.
- The library will reach out to traditional students through broadcast email before mid-terms, in the Chanticleer, on Facebook, on posters at the library and a Student Center poster session. Activities will include special programs for RA's and student leaders.
- Librarians will continue to offer library orientation for general education and upper division courses. We will expand teaching resources customized to needs of specific instructors and disciplines.
- Librarians will offer weekly demonstrations of general education and discipline-based resources at the library. We have plans to record these sessions for electronic distribution and insertion in courseware. (Schedule to be announced in April, alternating days and times, for example 1st Tuesday, last Thursday at 11:15; 2nd Monday at 3; 3rd Wednesday at 4.)
Announcements
Coffee!
The library now has a single serve K-cup brewer for coffee, tea, hot cider and cocoa. Relax with a hot drink while you see what we have to offer in your discipline! We will offer a prize for the perfect library pastry recipe - not too sticky on the outside, can be consumed in one gulp.
E-Reserves
Please ask a librarian if you want to use electronic reserves for a course in the fall. Dr. Hayes has pioneered the system successfully with two upper division courses. Linking from Moodle should be easy. Our e-reserves system facilitates compliance with copyright guidelines, and library staff will do the scanning.
Seminars
Ask a librarian if you want to schedule a large group (of 11-22) or small group (of 3-10) for a seminar or film viewing in the library, including presentation software, streaming video, DVD or VHS. Our small group technology has wheels!
Spring 2012
Dear Faculty:
The library offers several new services for you and your students in 2011-2012. We welcome your participation in collection development through Choice Reviews Online and the Bowker Collection Analysis project comparing Averett holdings to Resources for College Libraries. We look forward to consulting with your students as they embark on Spring research projects.
These features are available now -- librarians will be happy to visit your office to demonstrate and answer your questions.
1. Library Home and Subject Research Guides:
Library faculty have developed 27 guides to date. We welcome suggestions for enhancing them to meet your expectations for course assignments and student research. We are eager to to adopt web 2.0 technologies enabled by Springshare CampusGuides, which include course guides that you can co-edit, boxes for podcasts and multimedia, polls, surveys, and formulated Google Scholar searches and patent searches.
2. Choice Reviews Online
Please register for a free account and create your profile to retrieve monthly book and media reviews by discipline and reading/recommendation levels. If you prefer not to access Choice each month, you can request monthly emails of new reviews in your profile OR ask your liaison to print and mail them to you.
To order books and media or add a digital source to a research guide, simply forward Choice citations to your liaison librarian by email or campus mail.
3. Books in Print 2.0 | Fiction Connection | Nonfiction Connection
4. Book/Media Request Form for citations not found in Choice Online. The form is also on this page.
NOTE: Averett librarians welcome book and media requests in any legible format, via email, phone, campus mail, or in person. Feel free to mark a catalog or write on the back of an envelope and forward citations to your liaison librarian. You can also email citations to us from Amazon.com. Please include an ISBN if available.
5. Bowker Books Analysis, a year long project to compare Averett library collections to Resources for College Libraries. Liaison librarians will provide reports and work with academic programs to fill in gaps per your interests and curriculum. Contact eday@averett.edu for passwords.
6. American History in Video - See Kevin's review.
7. The Averett Library News. Read the current newsletter and archives from 2005 to the present. The newsletter is also linked under "Publications" on the library home guide.
8. Electronic Reserves were successfully piloted by Dr. Hayes in Fall 2011. If you have print articles on Course Reserves, library staff will be happy to scan them to a password protected site where your students can enjoy online access to required readings.
Please contact elaine.day@averett.edu or your liaison librarian with any questions and suggestions:
