The Purpose of Citing Work
Citing sources is a basic operation completed by any academic writer whether it is applied to a quotation or a paraphrase. Anyone's writing is his or her own intellectual property and should be respected and protected. Students who use information derived from someone else's writing must give credit to the author by citing that work.
Cite the source for every idea, phrase and statistic you use from the work of others.
Students should select one citation format for an assignment, or follow their instructor's directions for his or her particular course.
